Due to the sudden notice for this club meeting, many are unable to make it to the meeting as it would be too rush and most have activities planned on that day. As such, the club meeting has been postponed to next thurs day 2nd of Apr 2009. The venue would remain the same at the clubhouse and the time would be at 2pm.

Hi guys,

There would be an upcoming meeting held by the club. The date would most probably be on this thurs 26th March 2009 and the time set at 2pm. The venue of the meeting would be at the club house which is above fc3.

Agenda of the meeting include upcoming activities for the club and also recruitment of the year ones into our club.

The National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Foundation, Singapore Cancer Society and The Cancer Institute - National Healthcare Group, will be organising a Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) in October this year.

This years theme, 'The Women In Our Lives' seeks to enlist the husband's and children's help in encouraging their wives, mothers, and relatives in the high-risk groups (women aged 40 and above) to go for early and regular breast screenings.

For this purpose, we would like to work with student volunteers from your institution to help raise awareness on Breast Cancer. Enlisting the help of students for the Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign will help us achieve our aims in two ways: the students enthusiasm and youthful energy will help raise awareness better, and having them spread these message will also enable us to encourage them to encourage their mothers and relatives to go for early breast screenings.

There are two events that will need the youthful enthusiasm of your students to succeed:

1. Breast Cancer Awareness Drive

On the 3 weekends in the run up to BCAM in October (13 and 14, 20 and 21, 27 and 28 September, and 4 and 5, 11 and 12 October), the committee intends to send out student volunteers on the streets to encourage Women to pledge themselves to sign up for breast screenings.

Wearing Pink T-shirts provided by the BCAM committee, these students would give out collaterals with information on the events of the campaign, as well as encourage women to pledge to go for breast screenings.

Students will also be given a fact sheet that lists out the facts about breast cancer so they can be better informed about this disease and explain what the campaign is about to members of the public, and so that they can encourage their mothers and relatives go for early screenings as well.

We intend to field 20 volunteers per day (for a total of 200 students), from 3-5pm, along Orchard Road. To encourage the students to go all out and raise awareness for this campaign, we will be giving prizes to the student with the most pledges from women in the high risk groups to go for early screening, as well as members of the public who pledge to encourage their wives, mothers and relatives in the high risk groups to go for screenings.

2. Pink Bridges – A walk for the women in our lives

This will be the closing event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). It will involve 250 breast cancer patients, survivors and health professionals.

The evening walk from Mt Faber to HortPark along the Southern Ridges, crossing Henderson Waves and Alexandra Arch is a befitting close to BCAM. The 3km, 1hr walk is symbolic of the many difficult crossings our patients, their families and their healthcare partners have to endure as they journey together.

This event will take place on the 25 of October 2008, from 3pm to 10 pm

The late afternoon walk will culminate with a dinner, and various teambuilding/ educational activities at HortPark.

Student volunteers will be needed to marshal and guide participants along the route of the walk, and with their youthful enthusiasm, encourage the participants on the walk.

The encouragement by the students along the walk would be symbolic to the participants; we would want the breast cancer patients and survivors to know that they are not alone in their difficult breast cancer journey.

We intend to have about 20 student volunteers working with us on the pink bridges project.

About the Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month is internationally commemorated in October every year. With the focus on increasing awareness of breast cancer, promoting early detection and providing support for people affected by the disease, BCAM is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of early detection and encouraging women to come forward for mammography screening.

This year, we want to reach out not only directly to women in the high-risk categories, but their loved ones, i.e. husbands and children, as well. We want the family to play a part in encouraging the women in the family to be screened, and thus the theme for this year, “The Women In Our Lives”.

The campaign will be officially opened on the 4th of October 2008 at 5pm, which will then be followed by a Pink Silhouette Walk, which is jointly organised by BCF and Reebok. Approximately 4,000 people will take part in the event aimed at emphasising the importance of a healthy lifestyle to reduce the likelihood of contracting breast cancer. The walk along the Singapore River Promenade will end with a spectacular light-up (in pink) of the Arts House (old parliament house).

BCAM's closing event will be held on the 25th of October 2008. The Pink Bridges - Walk for the women in our lives event will take place on this Saturday evening. Then, 250 breast cancer survivors, their families, as well as healthcare professionals will walk from Mt Faber Park to HortPark, across the Henderson Waves Bridge and Anderson Arch Bridge to symbolise the many difficult crossing our patient, their families and their healthcare partners have to endure through their Breast Cancer journey.

1 Star Kayaking Course

Would like to ask if anybody is interested to go for 1 star Kayaking course during the holiday which is September or the 1st wk of October. For Muslims signing up for the course, is it alright to have the course during the fasting month?

Hey people how are you all getting along ? Ready for new activities in line for the all of you ???

Events that are confirmed and in place are the 'Healthy Lifestyle DAy' that would be on 30th July 2008 (Wednesday). Activity would be bowling at guildhouse from 3pm to 5 pm. Gathering point would be at the clubhouse. Please bring along shoes and $10 for the event. People please reply to the email on whether are you able to attend this event.

Next up!

Diving course! We have a SCUBA Diving Course planned, to be held in conjunction with the SP SCUBA Diving Club.

Certification will be from NAUI(National Association of Underwater Instructors), and the course will consist of 2 days of theory and pool practice(usually held on weekdays), followed by the 3 day/2 night expedition(leave on Friday afternoon, return on Sunday night).

This live-aboard expedition will be conducted off Mapor Island(near Bintan) on a 3 1/2 deck Dive Boat. With 20 air-conditioned bunks, the Bintan Explorer is a great place to dive from, compared to many so called 'resorts' that may live up to expectations in the water, but fall shrt when it comes to lodging. Furthermore, instead of having to lug heavy gear over long distances, you need only suit up and jump overboard, and everything is within arm's reach at a moment's notice.

At $445(student rate, witheverything inclusive - food, lodging, transport, equipment rental, EVERYTHING), this course is cheaper than most other expeditions of comparable quality.

A peek into the future...

There would be the 1 star Kayaking course in view. Also a Kayaking expedition would be held tentatively during the month of October. There is also there would be a night cycling trip planned for the month of DecEmber. More details would be posted up on the blog nearing the event.

It's already June and we have done only 1 activity (exclusive CCA booth).

A few questions have been bothering me.

How's Poly 50? Any hopeful?
How's planning for LTC? I would suggest early planning a.s.a.p
I'm looking forward to Backpacking Day by the BOSS. (COOL!)
